According to the glossary created by open-access.network "[s]elf-archiving refers to making documents that have been published with a publisher or in a journal freely available to the public on open access document servers or repositories".
It is thus a way of "green open access" and allows for open access to previously subscription-based articles, but worthwhile also for genuine open-access publications.
