The publication process incurs costs for editing, typesetting, technical infrastructure, and more. There are various models for covering these costs. In closed access, the costs are covered by subscriptions and book purchases by libraries. In Open Access, authors are often charged so-called article or book processing charges (APC and BPC). Universities often cover these costs - under certain conditions. Furthermore, there are journals that do not charge their authors for publishing articles. Other funding options exist to allow authors to publish for free.
