The course corresponds with §5.5 "Content Accessibility" of the Reusable Curriculum for Upskilling Trainings which was developed within CRAFT-OA.

The choice of topics regarding long-term archiving is based on previous research on the Diamond OA community's needs. The Institutional Publishing in the ERA: Results from the DIAMAS survey (Armengou et al. 2023) asked about the main challenges of publishers with digital preservation. The table below shows the challenges next to the chapters of this course in which they are addressed.

Why is long-term archiving important?

1

Based on "Table 41 Challenges - Archiving, backing up or preserving content and software" (Armengou et al., 2023, p. 137) with course questions added by A. Afanaseva.

Additionally, one of the results of The Open Access Diamond Journals Study 2020 was that "Journals need guidance on what is meant more specifically by archiving in this context, what possibilities exist and how they can be used at low or no cost” (Bosman et al., 2021, S. 58).
Finally, since the
DIAMAS Survey (Armengou et al., 2023, p. 137) as well as an interview-based study of Australian ceased journals (Jamali et al., 2022, p. 225) reveal that a number of journal managers were not sure if their journal was archived and where, a section about the ways to check this was added to the course.
