Photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

This dataset consists of downwelling and upwelling under ice PAR (photosynthetically available radiation; 400-700 nm wave band) and spectral irradiance data collected in March 2013 on the ice in Kangerlussuaq, west Greenland. Under ice downwelling PAR and spectral irradiance in this area are well known, but a lack of measurements of the upwelling irradiance was identified. It was hypothesised that this might add or enhance under ice primary production. Therefore this dataset was collected using PAR and spectral radiometer sensors both above and below the ice. Surface downwelling and upwelling PAR (µmol photons/m**2/s), as well as albedo (0-1 scale) and air temperature (°C; 1 m above the snow surface), were measured at 0.5 m above the sea-ice with two LI-COR LI-190R Quantum Sensors. A LI-COR LI-192 Underwater Quantum Sensor was mounted 3 cm below the snow covered sea-ice to measure under ice downwelling PAR. Measurements were taken every 5 minutes for one week and are provided here as a time series.
