Abstract: In the frame of the DAMAST (Dams and Seismicity) (https://www.damast-caucasus.de/) project we deployed a dense high-fidelity seismological real-time network to investigate in detail the spatio-temporal seismicity distribution around the Enguri high dam, situated in the greater Caucasus in western Georgia. We aim at recording the weak seismicity in a 10 km distance around the dam structure. We installed an 8-station local seismic network to record weak seismicity in 10 km around the dam, with good coverage and high sensitivity around Ingirishi fault segments. To lower the detection threshold by reducing the ambient background noise, we installed four seismic stations in shallow (ca. 20 m) and deep boreholes. From these stations, KIT1 with a depth of ca. 250 m is the deepest seismological station in Georgia. The network installation was performed in three main stages, October 2020, December 2020, and September 2021.
The published catalog, which is a collaboration between Geophysical Institute of KIT, and M. Nodia Institute of Geophysics, I. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), includes preliminary processing results of 316 earthquakes occurred between October 2020 to July 2022, within the longitude range between 41.64 and 42.34, and the latitude range between 42.53 and 43. For each event, origin time, latitude, longitude, depth (km), number of stations, GAP, RMS, magnitude (if applicable) and magnitude type are given. A 1-D velocity model of the upper mantle in Caucasus and adjacent regions is employed for the location process (Murusidze., G. 1987). Pg- and Sg-phases are manually picked using SEISAN-Earthquake analysis software (Havskov and Ottemoller, 1999.) and for each event, local magnitude (Ml) is estimated using S-phase amplitude read on both horizontal components. The catalog is presented and discussed in detail in Karamzadeh et. al 2023.
